Manfred Pils, President of Naturefriends International, took part in the opening ceremonies of the Landscape of the Year Senegal/the Gambia. Here is what he experienced:
„Over Tourism“: Our own behaviour is part of the solution.
„Tourists go home!“ Since last year, we can hear the cries and protests from the local communities against the flood of tourists more and more often. “Over Tourism” is the new buzzword, which also plays a big part in the discussions and panels happening at ITB, the international tourism fair currently happening in Berlin. There are many reasons for the current overload at tourism hotspots – our travel and consumption patterns are part of it.
In the next years, Naturefriends International will put the fight against climate change and for more climate justice into the focus of its work. It makes specific politic demands and calls on politicians to act quickly.
Locals protesting on the streets vs the tourism industry rejoicing in rising guest numbers – Naturefriends demand quality and sustainability rather than thoughtless growth!
More than 250 non-government organisations from across Europe have today released an alternative vision for a more democratic, just and sustainable Europe.
In a joint declaration with partner organisations from all over the world, Naturefriends International request the tourism industry to transform its business model.
The Naturefriends Climate Fund provides all Naturefriends with the opportunity of supporting climate protection projects by African Naturefriends as a compensation for trips with the plane or car - and thus of contributing personally to more climate justice.
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Naturefriends International demands the active implementation of a sustainable energy transition in Europe. Important instruments are the introduction of CO2 taxes and true-cost pricing for nuclear power plants.
