Mass tourism also brought the arrival of more and more ill-equipped tourists in the high-mountain region. In the 1960s, the number of alpine accidents saw a dramatic rise. In response to this development, Naturefriends founded the Glockner-Kaprun mountaineering school in 1962, which was run by the renowned Himalaya climber Fritz Moravec. His demand was that “information and education about risks in the mountains” ought to be taught to the same extent as road safety education. From 1968 on, the mountaineering school ran “Kids’ rope teams”, the aim of which was to playfully acquaint children aged 8 to 12 with high-mountain areas and alpine techniques.
