Climate protection recognised as a human right
On 9 April, the European Court of Human Rights came to a landmark decision: Switzerland was sued for failing to protect the climate. The "KlimaSeniorinnen Schweiz" (Climate Seniors Switzerland) association, which represents more than 2,500 women over the age of 64, had lodged this claim. It argued that Switzerland's insufficient actions to combat climate change violated Article 8 of the Convention on Human Rights, which guarantees the right to respect for private and family life. The senior citizens stressed that older women in particular suffer from the consequences of climate change, such as heatwaves.
"This judgement is a milestone for climate protection and supports our long-standing demand for greater commitment from wealthy states to climate protection and climate justice," says Manfred Pils, President of Naturefriends International. In autumn 2023, the XXV Congress of Naturefriends International adopted a catalogue of demands to the industrialised and emerging countries and decided on concrete measures on how the global Naturefriends movement itself will implement more climate justice.
