Under the motto “Wasting food is rubbish” (“Essen verschwenden ist Mist”), the topic of food waste took centre-stage in 2016, spearheaded by MUTTER ERDE, a cooperation of the broadcaster ORF and leading Austrian environmental organisations, among them Naturefriends Austria. It was under this motto that Naturefriends, together with 16 Naturefriends houses, published the brochure “Cooking with Naturefriends houses! Recipes & recommendations to avoid food waste” (“Naturfreunde-Hütten kochen auf! Rezepte & Tipps gegen Lebensmittelverschwendung”).

The 56-page brochure contains a great deal of information on how to use food in a conscientious manner: from purchase over storage to the use of leftovers. In the recipe section, 16 Naturefriends houses present delicious dishes, the preparation of which includes leftovers as ingredients. The brochure also provides information on the responsible use of food, practical recommendations on food storage and a series of recipes for amazing meals, using up leftovers.
