In 1985, a Naturefriends “fence post activity” served to prevent the establishment of yet another road toward an Alpine pasture at the Rinsennock mountain in the Nockberge mountains in Carinthia. Hundreds of Naturefriends members manually carried the fence posts, which farmers needed for the erection of a pasture fence, to the Alpine pasture.
Their commitment to the nature reserve Nockberge contributed to the area being declared a national park by the Carinthian government in 1987. Later, the region was declared a biosphere reserve by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which provides additional international protection.
