Good Practice: De Banjaert (Netherlands)

Ten minutes' walk from the widest beach in the Netherlands, you'll find the Banjaert Naturefriends House and Campsite in the dunes. The house was completely rebuilt in 2006 and is designed to be in harmony with its natural surroundings: a sedum roof, a generous photovoltaic system, sophisticated thermal insulation and natural building materials (such as untreated red cedar).

Green Key Ecolabel and energy reduction

In 2018, the Dutch Naturefriends (NIVON), with the support of Delft University of Technology, decided to align all their homes with the strict criteria of the Green Key Ecolabel. Electricity consumption has already fallen by 35% compared to 2012 - thanks to the use of more efficient refrigerators, LED lighting, solar panels and CHP systems.

Reducing energy consumption for heating was more challenging. Here, high investments were made in the insulation of buildings and heating pipes. In addition, modern control technology and intelligent metering systems were installed. The measures are proving successful: consumption has fallen by 18% since 2012.

The basis for the successful implementation of the Green Key criteria is energy-conscious management of the hotels, which is ensured by a regular exchange of knowledge. And the support of our guests is also important - stickers with texts such as "Windows open, heating off" motivate them to participate.
