50,000 people gathered on 6 October 2018 at the Hambach Forest on the edge of the Rhenish mining district, one of the largest opencast coal mines in Germany. With the slogan "Save the forest - stop the coal" they demonstrated for a quick exit of Germany from the climate-damaging coal and against the destruction of the forest.

Together with other organizations, Naturefriends called for this largest anti-coal demonstration until now. Mamadou Mbodji, Vice President of Naturefriends International and Chairman of the Naturefriends Network in Africa was also present. In his speech he pointed out that the people in his homeland Africa are already suffering massively from the negative effects of climate change, which are destroying their livelihoods: crop failures due to drought, natural disasters, coastal erosion... "Stop coal mining!" and an end to all fossil fuels is the priority of this moment!
