From 1950 on, the period of the “Cold War” reinforced the threat of a nuclear war between superpowers. In response to this, civil society initiated the Easter March movement in 1958 in London, which became particularly popular in Germany; to this day, German Naturefriends continue to be actively involved in the movement. Between 1973 and 1976, Young Naturefriends in Austria were involved in the “Via della Pace” project, during which they renovated the via ferratas along the ancient frontline in the Dolomite Alps as a monument for peace. And the local Naturefriends group in Ulm organises regular commemoration ceremonies to ensure that the victims of the concentration camp Oberer Kuhberg will never be forgotten.
